International crises

Lux­em­bourg has main­tained its com­mit­ment to major human­i­tar­i­an crises around the world. Thus, in 2023 the Grand Duchy made a total con­tri­bu­tion of more than EUR16.36 mil­lion to the human­i­tar­i­an response in the Sahel, cov­er­ing Niger (EUR7.2 mil­lion), Burk­i­na Faso (EUR3.9 mil­lion), Mali (EUR3.8 mil­lion) and Chad (EUR1.1 mil­lion). In addi­tion, the human­i­tar­i­an crises in Ukraine and Syr­ia remain pri­or­i­ties for Luxembourg’s human­i­tar­i­an action, with amounts of EUR6 mil­lion and EUR4.9 mil­lion, respec­tive­ly, allo­cat­ed in 2023. Anoth­er pri­or­i­ty for Luxembourg’s human­i­tar­i­an action in 2023 was the human­i­tar­i­an response fol­low­ing the con­flict in Ethiopia, with a total con­tri­bu­tion of about EUR2.4 mil­lion. Oth­er human­i­tar­i­an con­tri­bu­tions in 2023 were for the human­i­tar­i­an crises in South Sudan (EUR2.3 mil­lion), Afghanistan (EUR2 mil­lion), Yemen (EUR1.75 mil­lion) and Sudan (EUR1.8 mil­lion). Lux­em­bourg has also react­ed to sud­den crises such as the con­flict in Nagorno-Karabakh, the floods in Libya, and the earth­quakes in Moroc­co, Turkey and Syr­ia, by mak­ing finan­cial and, espe­cial­ly, in-kind con­tri­bu­tions available.
